Native American Heritage Month

Celebración Día de Muertos

Martes November 2, 5:00 p.m. Misa

Tuesday November 2, 5:00 p.m. Service
Let us celebrate together the creation of the altar, with beautiful and bright colors, sugar skulls, food and photographs of loved ones who have already left this world, with hope of reunion.  An altar helps us to understand that life does not end with death, that we still exist on other planes, that after death there is life, and that true death is when we forget the loved ones who have already departed.

Wednesday, November 3, 12:10 p.m.

“Indigenous Artistic Expressions:
Unifying the Sacred”

This exhibition features Arizona indigenous artists, Averian Chee, Jonathan Sky Duncan, David John, and Denoveigh Mitchell. At the time of European contact, Native people were introduced to various Christian religions. Christian practices were imposed onto a people who already had a complex religious and ceremonial order. Some chose to incorporate these new ways of celebrating God into their existing tribal spirituality. The works in this exhibition demonstrate the duality of spiritual beliefs for Native people.

Facilitated by Cook Native American Ministries Foundation, the exhibition is on view from October 29 to November 22, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 3 pm.

Las Posadas Navideñas 2021/Christmas Posadas 2021

In Mexico, Christmas is an important holiday season with strong traditions. One of the most colorful traditions is the Posada party, celebrated every evening for nine evenings often ending on December 24. These celebrations commemorate Mary and Joseph’s cold and difficult journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. “Posada” in Spanish means lodging or shelter.

Everyone meets at the Cathedral entrance to receive a program and a candle.
The procession will be from the Great Doors of the Cathedral to the door of the Bishop’s Residence, making two more stops, to conclude at the Cathedral entrance.

The doors open & pilgrims are welcome inside. All sing together jubilantly.

This Band of Sisterhood: Black Women Bishops on Race, Faith, and the Church

Editor Westina Matthews joins the discussion online. Dr. Matthews is an adjunct professor for the Center for Christian Spirituality at General Theological Seminary in New York.

About the book: “As increased feelings of division sweep our country, Black women clergy in the Episcopal Church have voiced a need to come together, believing that their experiences and concerns may be very different from those of other clergy. The five Black women bishops featured in this book—Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, Carlyel J. Hughes, Kimberly Lucas, Shannon MacVean-Brown, and Phoebe A. Roaf—offer honest, vulnerable wisdom from their own lives that speaks to this time in American life.”
