Garfield Elementary Backpack Drive

The students at Garfield Elementary School return for the first day of classes on August 1st. We are hoping to collect more than 100 backpacks full of supplies so that students in need can start the year with all of the essentials they need to succeed.

We are asking everyone to purchase one backpack and fill it with the following:

  • 1 personal pencil box or pouch
  • 1 box of pencils
  • 1 handheld pencil sharpener
  • 2 pink erasers
  • 1 box of colored pencils
  • 1 box of markers
  • 1 box of crayons
  • 4 glue sticks
  • 1 composition notebook
  • 3 spiral notebooks
  • 2 folders
  • 1 pack of 3 count dry erase markers
  • 1 pair of children’s scissors

You have until Sunday, July 21st to bring your filled backpacks to the Cathedral, at which time we will bless them all before bringing them over to the school for distribution to the students.

If you have any questions, please contact me!

Garfield Elementary School Food Pantry

“For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat…”
Matthew 25:35

We continue to collect food supplies to ensure that our at-risk families have enough to eat. You can deliver pantry items during business hours and on Sunday.

Always needed:
• Pasta, all kinds, Mac & Cheese, stovetop stuffing
• Beans
• Other canned items, such as tomatoes, vegetables, Fruit, Tuna, Chicken
• Rice
• Fruit cups, Peanut Butter, Jelly
• Cereal
• Powdered Milk
• Small plastic bottles of cooking oil

We are currently distributing food twice a month, each family receiving a combination of protein, fruit and vegetables and pastas.  Each supplementary bag of food given out costs approximately 20 dollars. So please don’t feel like you need to bring a table full of food (though we love getting all that food!), just bring a bag with a selection from the items above.

Things to avoid if at possible:
Glass jars as the bags get heavy
Commercial / family / super-sized containers of food
